Quilt Trunk: School House Project
• School House Project • Quilt Trunk Reviews •
The School House Project is a community outreach effort of the State Quilt
Guild of New Jersey. The goal of the project is “to share the quilting
experience with New Jersey schoolchildren at third and fourth grade levels,
emphasizing the creative, mathematical, and historical significance of quilts
and quilting.”
The project is being presented in a “trunk show” format and includes:
- A completed quilt and coordinated storybook, The Quiltmaker’s Gift, by
Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken
- A quilt top (36 in. by 40 in.) made by volunteers with the School House
block included
- More than two-dozen individual quilt squares made by guild members
- Quilt square storyboards telling the history of each square made and
donated by South Shore Stitchers in Tuckahoe
- Dozens of elementary-age quilting story books donated by individual
quilt guilds
- Work Station materials for a hands-on design project where children work
in small groups and design quilt squares using the shapes provided. The
squares can be combined to show the group effort. Emphasizing mathematical
shapes and measurement, each child can reproduce his/her design using art
materials or fabric, joining them for a class project.
- Historical information and folklore
- Mathematical worksheets and activities
- Foreign language books with English words above and Spanish below
- A comprehensive curriculum guide and resource list with websites for
further references for quilt education
- Ideas and projects for quilting with kids
The trunk show is available to schools throughout the state. Schools may keep
the trunk for a two-week time period. Contact Judy Kronmeyer at 609-693-5113 or
