Unlike scrap Log Cabin quilts that feature a different fabric in every strip of a block, this scrap Log Cabin quilt depends on orderly repetition of fabrics within each block. Learn a great method for cutting and sewing that makes these blocks fast and, better yet, square. The four blocks you make in class can be the start of a big quilt or a very satisfactory wallhanging approximately 30” square.
Minimum fabrics (will make four 13” blocks): 4 Fat Quarters, one 8” square for center squares (1/2 yard if you eventually want to make 9 sets for a full size quilt). Choose four compatible fat quarters using value as the most important part of the selection process. There should be 1 dark fabric, 1 light fabric, 2 medium fabrics. Strips of the dark fabric will alternate with one medium and strips of the light fabric will alternate with the other medium. Bring more than one combination if you like. The fat quarters must be fat quarters, 18”x21”. Regular 9” x 45” quarter yards don’t work! Scraps don’t work!
Materials: Sewing machine in good working order, rotary cutter and mat (at least 12”x18”); 1 acrylic ruler at least 18” long; thread for piecing; ¼” foot if available; favorite personal sewing notions. **Marti supplies a Log Cabin ruler for use in class. Visit www.fromMarti.com for more product info.

INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED - This design intimidates quilters because there are 32 points in each compass. With the correct pattern, cutting and sewing techniques everyone can make this pattern if they wish, because Shar breaks it down to its simplest form and piece by piece shows how to cut and sew it together. Learn to know the need for sewing with a scant ¼” seam allowance and the benefits of using a stiletto. Discover how to connect perfect points and end up with a flat 12” block. Choose from 16 compasses including Sunburst, Sunflower, Split compasses, and Concentric compasses. Each compass can be made with 16 or 32 points.
Fabric yardage: solids or small scale prints – 2-1/4 yard light or dark background fabric (black is the easiest color to work with); 1/3 yard of four fabrics for points (light, medium and dark values). Pre-wash fabric before coming to class.
Supply List: QS 30 Mariner’s Compass book and templates, Quick Grips, 6”x24” and 12-1/2” square Omnigrid ruler, glass head silk pins 0.50mm steel shaft, large and small mat rotary mats, rotary cutter (Shar prefers small cutter), Stiletto (optional – Shar teaches the importance of using stiletto), 100% cotton thread, Stencils ST1-28, ST2-28, St1-30 and St2-30 (optional). Sewing machine in good working order and basic sewing supplies. Visit www.qheartland.com for more product info.
Curved piecing has never been so easy using Linda’s non-agonizing method. Students learn how to rotary cut convex and concave curves with the rotary cutter, an easy way to prepare templates and of course, how to set in those curves for a smooth finish! Linda provides a handout, which shows many different design options, and you will have a chance for exploration during class. Linda will also share her unique method of auditioning quilting designs for this particular block at the end of the class. This is a technique class rather than a project oriented class since there are so many design possibilities to explore. A whole day class will complete enough blocks for a small top. Linda has generously donated her class teaching fees to benefit the State Quilt Guild of NJ.
Materials: Sewing machine in good working order, basic quilting supplies, ¼” foot, neutral thread for piecing, 32 Fat Eights OR a minimum of 40- 9” squares, template plastic, paper scissors, fabric scissors, scotch tape, rotary cutter (I use the 28mm), small ruler with bias line, (Optional – portable design wall to lay out blocks), cheap page protector and a dry erase marker, pencil, glue stick.
Kit/Handout required: Extensive handout of, paper templates, layout options - $2.00 fee per student payable to instructor. Instructor will also have a limited supply of acrylic template sets by Elisa’s Backporch on hand for optional purchase.

This workshop is designed to help students discover innovative ways to set antique and new blocks. Participants bring blocks to share and together we develop ideas to best showcase the block sets. The workshop includes a trunk show of innovative sets in antique and contemporary textiles.
Supply List: Participants are asked to bring new or vintage block sets that are waiting to be completed. We will collectively discuss options and auditions to showcase those unfinished projects. Students are encouraged to bring paper, pencil and a digital camera if desired.
